Philadelphia Flyers left wing Donald Brashear will be sidelined at least three weeks after injuring his left knee in practice Tuesday.

Brashear's injury was described by team physician Dr. Peter DeLuca as a grade II sprain and a partial tear of his MCL.

"It's not something that's treated surgically. It will heal by itself," DeLuca said. "It will be three to six weeks before he can get back. ... The first goal is to get the motion back and then get his strength back." NFL Tickets

Brashear, 31, has one goal in two games this season after totaling eight goals, 17 assists and 161 penalty minutes in 80 contests in 2002-03.

The Flyers also learned that left wing Radovan Somik will be out four to six weeks after re-tearing the meniscus in his knee. Surgery is scheduled for Thursday at Hahnemann University Hospital.

"In the summertime in Slovakia, he injured his knee and had surgery," DeLuca explained. "Everything went fine and then, towards the end of training camp, he started to develop a little bit of swelling and the pain got worse." NFL Tickets

Somik, 26, had eight goals and 10 assists in 60 games as a rookie last season.

To fill one of the roster spots, Philadelphia recalled left wing Boyd Kane from the Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League. The 25-year-old collected 15 goals, 22 assists and 121 penalty minutes last season in 72 games with Springfield of the AHL.
