Chad Pennington will be the No. 3 quarterback for the New York Jets when they play the Houston Texans on Sunday.
Pennington, who broke and dislocated his left wrist in a preseason game against the New York Giants, will only play if starter Vinny Testaverde and backup Brooks Bollinger get hurt.
If Pennington enters the game for the Jets (1-4) before the fourth quarter, Testaverde and Bollinger would not be able to return.
Coach Herman Edwards said Wednesday there is a 50-50 chance Pennington will
start the Jets' following game, against Philadelphia. Pennington has been cleared
to practice and is not listed on the team's injury report. NFL Tickets
Edwards will decide whether to start Pennington against the Eagles based on practice this week. Pennington will not comment on his progress.
``You can't worry about Chad, because Vinny's the quarterback, he's going to have to play good again and we're going to have to help him,'' Edwards said. NFL Tickets
Testaverde is not even thinking about the day Pennington returns to the lineup.
``Whatever is best to help the team win, that's the bottom line,'' Testaverde said. ``We all know what's going to happen. When the time comes, I'll deal with it in my own way.''
